In a shocking incident, a three month old infant was immersed into a vessel full of boiling water and lifted out by his own parents at Jumalapur village in Bijapur district. Reports suggest the couple were just following orders from the village priest. Fortunately the baby is safe and didn’t utter a sound even after its appalling experience. The atrocious act was supposedly watched by the village folks.

The parents, Prabhavati and Sanganagouda looked unafraid, and in fact, were happy that they were performing the ritual. On further probe, it was learned that the couple were childless a few years ago. Fed up, the disappointed couple prayed that their wish be fulfilled. Hanumantray Hugar, priest of Balabhim temple of Jumalapur village told them, that they will be blessed with two children, one of which will die early and the second child should be dipped in boiling water as a religious ritual. In due course, the first baby was born, but died early. The second one was born within a year, and the ritual was performed.

Vinny’s take: How on earth can someone dip a 3 month old in boiling water? People reach unprecedented heights of insanity hypnotized by rogues claiming they can dictate life under the name of religion. Superstitions are deeply rooted in our society. Unrealistic rituals should be banned and people encouraging those should be immediately put under trial. Government should fund and encourage awareness campaigns. With a literacy rate of 65%, educating the masses is of prime importance in India. Higher priority should be given to subjects like “Moral Science” and a sense of responsibility should be inculcated in individuals

The height of following such rituals which may or may not prove to be harmful, exist in India and that too because of the illiteracy rate of the population who are most vulnerable targets of such things.

Yes, exactly. Not only are they vulnerable to such rituals, but they are also easy targets for extremists and fundamentalists.

moral science or not...The need of the hour is definitely education. I agree when you say that they are a easy target for extremists and fundamentalists. They need to be shown the error of their ways, not to be hailed as parents who have 'followed' a religious ritual. Villages need to be educated, not a small set in isolation because this is not the first incident and may not be the last.

Even though the government funds on education and implement the system, it is upto the people to apply what they learnt. Awareness plays a very less role in this case. Come on guys, how many of them would follow the ideals that were taught in awareness programs/education? Their culture and tradition runs down deep in their blood. They will listen to things they want to listen, and omits the rest.

What i suggest is - trigger a mass revolution from within. Identify a strong leader of a community, and make him/her understand the ideals.

1. The leader will have the power to change the rituals/traditions.
2. The whole village listens to its leader.

I am sure that this strategy will help villages to come up.

Very good! I am afraid the old adage ignorance is Bliss rules the day!Doing things like that even in the US is not rare enough! Babies and children die occasionally because religious beliefs do not allow medicine.
Last year here a woman put her baby in the microwave,You can imagine the results! Anyway with the turmoil around the world just beginning and will get worse people are more turning to Religion for help. Religion is no help but the largest part of the problems today!

vineeth you are so right we need education to get rid of ignorance and insanity...

It's such a heinous act, people are crazy & ignorant to go to any extent in the name of religion. I agree with you completely that education plays a great role in eliminating such evils in the society.
