Baby dipped into boiling water as part of ritual

In a mysterious religious ritual by a couple at Jumalapur village in Bijapur district, a three-month-old infant was dunked into a vessel full of boiling water and lifted out, as the horrifying act drew shocked gasps from the public and media persons gathered.

The baby appeared fine, and she seemed absolutely normal, with not even a small cry coming from her.

The parents, looking unafraid and determined, in fact, were happy that they were carrying out the ritual, held during the festival of Balabhim near Talikot town on Friday.

The parents, Prabhavati and Sanganagouda of Navadagi village near Talikot town, married a few years ago, but had no children. Fed up, the disappointed couple prayed that their wish be fulfilled.

Hanumantray Hugar, priest of Balabhim (Anjaneya) temple of Jumalapur village had told them, presumably speaking on behalf of the Almighty: "I will give two issues to you, out of which one will be taken by self. Another should be dipped in boiling water as a religious ritual".

In due course, the first baby was born, but died early. The second one was born within a year, and the ritual was performed. This superstition is a challenge to science and everything in the real world, as the baby is fine and normal, even after the excruciatingly painful experience.

OMG…what kind of ritual is that? Dunking their own baby in boiling hot water, are they crazy or what!? I am glad that the child survived such painful experience but I’m still wondering how in the world, the baby did not even cry with pain or anything. Must be a miracle! Interesting news, pranay!

What is up with these rituals? Earlier someone posted something about some lady chopping off her husband's head as a ritual. And now, this post talks about putting babies in boiling water. I think it's just crazy.

Yes, it seems "crazy" by our standards, but it does beg the question HOW was this baby able to survive and emerge with little or no visible damage? Does it teach us something we didn't know before, or point to areas of inquiry we've never considered?

The report seems to imply that this is a tradition that has baffled science for sometime, so I think comparing it to a woman chopping off her husband's head (that one'll kill you everytime, no mystery there) is a bit extreme. Not that I condone dipping babies in pots of boiling water, not at all. In fact, such a thing never once crossed my mind my entire life until I read this report. But I will sleep easier knowing this baby, at least, was no worse for the wear.

'Crazy' ain't the word...how in gods name can that be a ritual, its a baby with sensitive skin...but i think something was rubbed on that baby's skin,i still cant get that kind of ritual through my head...crazy, very crazy

Apparently, this ritual, if performed correctly, does not damage the child, but instead serves some positive purpose. Of course, if the story itself is true. If such ritual were to save your baby and otherwise made no damage, won't you perform it?

absolutely not! And it does not save your baby. Its a miracle that the baby has survived. I am okay with people following superstition. But dumping a baby in a pot of boiling water is beyond foolishness. It is outright crazy. People wouldn't even do that to their worst enemies.

I'm appauled! Did God, ALLAH, etc. personally ask for this test. We're not in biblical times. It's time people took their heads out of their as#es.The bible, koran, etc. are full of lessons that aren't necessarily meant to be taken literally. This is evil doing, not God.
