I don’t know if they deserve to be called the unluckiest tourist couple who witnessed three separate major terrorist attacks in the world, or the luckiest couple to stay safe unlike many other unlucky tourists who became victims of three of the world’s most horrible terrorist attacks. Meet Jason and Jenny Cairns-Lawrence, from Dudley, West Midlands.
They were in Mumbai last month when the Islamic militants took the Indian city under siege. They were also in New York on September 11th, 2001 when two passenger planes flew into the twin towers bringing down the World Trade Centre and killing almost 3,000 people. The same couple was also present in London on July 7th, 2005 when the terrorists blew up three underground trains and a double-decker bus taking lives of some 52 commuters.
Mrs. Cairns-Lawrence, 26, who works as a dental laboratory worker said, “It’s a strange coincidence. The terror attacks just happened when we were in the cities.” The couple escaped three major terrorist attacks so far and according to them India was the one that showed speedy recovery and sprang back to life in weeks.
They said that in New York, people carried the look of terror in their eyes for weeks after the carnage while in London; the police appeared to be more scared than the public. For Mr. Cairns-Lawrence, 42, Mumbai sprang back to its feet faster than New York or London. New York took almost a week to come back to normal. But Mumbai was back to its usual business from day three. It was just amazing.”
For me, the couple was the luckiest tourists among many during all the three terrorist attacks that took place in three different parts of the world. They were the ones who like many other tourists were present in those cities which were targeted by the terrorists but only they were lucky enough to luckily escape those terrible attacks every time.
