Technology market analysts report that the third quarter of 2008 is the first time in history that laptop sales have outstripped desktop sales.
Laptop sales have risen 40 percent over the same period in 2007 while those of desktops have dwindled by just over 1 percent to effect the change.
The news comes as no surprise: laptops have obviously grown in popularity as prices fall. Portability is a prized feature in computing and with improving battery life and processing power, laptops are the preferred breed.
Another factor behind the continued success of laptops is the ability of manufacturers to cutomize them to consumer requirements. You can get graphics heavy laptops for those into the gaming realm, the extra sleek for those lugging them around airports and in all shades and styles.
But then again, with the increasing popularity of the mini-laptops and phones with extra computing capability, it's highly likely that laptops themselves will be displaced in the near future.
Discussions on technology forums have been focusing on a call to OEMs to focus on interchangeable parts and standards to promote competition and efficiency in the industry.
