With iPhone applications proliferating at lightning pace, it can be daunting to sort through the jungle and uncover the jewels. Fortunately for us novices, iconic magazines such as Computerworld are happy to provide us with their expert guidance in such matters.

The award for best news reader goes to NetNewsWire which allows you to browse new articles, clip them for later reading and permits easy syncing with your Mac.

Instapaper Pro wins best app for reading articles. Its excellence is predicted on the ability to modify fonts as needed plus the chance to scroll through with a simple tilt for those of us too lazy to do some repetitive tapping.

Keeping an eye on financial markets is best done with Bloomberg which is free and gives you enough access to spreadsheets, indices and stock quotes to keep you happy - or unhappy depending on how your portfolio is performing.

SportsTap is great for following the latest scores from your teams of choice. Easy cutomization allows you to pick what you want and how you want to display it on your screen.

WunderRadio is the best of terrestrial radio streaming tens of thousands of stations to your interface.

2009 will surely bring even more applications to the fore, but these gems should keep you iPhone people busy till then.
