Emperor Akihito waved to a crowd of well-wishers on his 75th birthday Tuesday, assuring the nation that his health is improving after a series of illnesses.
The Emperor, who has undergone surgery and treatment for cancer, has recently cut back his official duties. He has also been trying to recover from an irregular pulse and bleeding from his stomach — symptoms Imperial doctors have attributed to "mental stress."
"Lately, I worried you as my health declined, but I believe I would recover gradually," the Emperor said, waving from the glassed-in balcony of the palace's main building during his first appearance in the morning. "I hope you have good health in the new year."
