With things always heating up in the online wars, Yahoo has announced some improvements to its existing applications in an effort to match Google and Microsoft.
The revamped mail interface has smart features such as providing instant access to contacts and updated information. The smart inbox also attempts to provide you with access to the most relevant information judged from usage trends.
Yahoo Toolbar is also out, though it remains to be seen whether it can earn a place in already overcrowded internet navigation tools given that it doesn't seem to be offering anything new.
Perhaps most interesting for Yahoo fanpersons is the My Yahoo customizable home page which should serve as a playground for a whole range of funky and quirky applications, gizmos and newsfeeds. Opening up the APIs to outside developers is hoped to trigger a move of application developers towards the Yahoo platform offering more customizable looks and features to the platform.
Unfortunately, much of this can be taken as evidence of Yahoo being a lumbering sleepy giant in the virtual forest. It will really take something bolder and more innovative to make Google take notice.
