We usually associate Intel with the chips humming inside our computers but if former CEO Andy Grove has his way, Intel will soon be providing technological and financial muscle to develop car batteries.
Grove sees diversification into car batteries as a positive strategic move for Intel to minimize its dependence on the health of the computer industry. He also sees the move as critical to the national economy: electric cars will reduce our dependence on foreign oil and provide a clean alternative.
Several companies are currently pursuing research in this area including auto icons like GM and smaller companies that specialize in battery technology usually for notebooks. Development of feasible batteries is regarded to be the main stumbling block to the widespread adoption of electric cars.
Intel is no stranger to venturing into unfamiliar territory. Its venture capital arm is always on the lookout for the next best thing and has demonstrated keen interest in firms that look to drive down costs in the development of alternative energy sources.
Grove feels Intel is uniquely placed both because of it financial resources and R&D capabilities related to efficient electrical design to make a difference.
