Google claims it wants to help us organize the information of the world and make it universally accessible. Given that for most of us organizing data relevant to our daily tasks is of paramount significance, Google Tasks makes perfect sense.
The product has not officially been launched yet since it is still being tinkered with by boffins in Google Labs. Try it out by digging it up from the Settings in your gmail. Google welcomes feedback as it debates whether the product will ultimately be launched or not.
Seeing that the bulk of our daily tasks can now be traced to our email, Google's commitment to a seamless integration of the two is commendable. Tasks rides on a layer above Gmail and lists activities in a window similar to online chat.
There seems to be no shortage of innovations streaming out of Google Labs these days. Google Suggest wantes to help you compose your queries. Google Goggles wants to make sure you don't send out mails you will later regret. Such quirky gadgets keep Google interesting but its things like Tasks and Google Calendar and Docs that have Microsoft nervous. Microsoft can rest assured that until Google formalizes its applications beyond their present existence, they will not be supplanting Microsoft Office.
