While social media in politics reached historic heights this election year, don’t expect speechwriter Jon Favreau to be singing its praises anytime soon. Favreau, 27, was expected to be White House Director of Speechwriting for President-elect Barack Obama, but a recent photo posted to his Facebook account, showing him fondling a life-size cutout of Secretary of State nominee Hillary Clinton, may end the young writer's dreams of Whilte House fame.

Favreau's photos from a party he attended while chief speechwriter for Obama’s presidential election campaign were posted to Facebook; according to a CNN.com report, the photos were up for only a couple of hours before he pulled them from his profile page, but by then the damage had already been done.

The moral of the story - discretion in a digital age is especially significant when, in just hours, one photo, one quote, or just one article, can cause irreparable damage and harm to reputations and future prospects.

Although this event is obviously significant from a social media standpoint, what has not been recognized yet is that this type of insensitivity happens all the time; people do, say, and behave in stupid ways and in this case, the behavior should not be tolerated for any reason.

In today’s world, all it takes is two hours to ruin a lifetime of work and effort. Most interesting though is that behaviors haven’t changed for the better - just the medium of exposing those who behave in stupid, sexist, degrading, and wildly tasteless ways. Perhaps this event will go down in political history as the “Favreau effect” - what not to do right before you start a job with a new presidential administration.

What do you think of Favreau's future as a result of this stunt? Should he be allowed to retain his appointment as Director of Speechwiting for the Obama White House? You can also take the poll, Should Favreau be allowed to keep his position as White House Speechwriter after having posted photos of himself fondling a Hillary cut-out?.

Maybe we should all shove metal rods up our assholes and duct tape our mouths shut so we walk like stiff silent robots and stay the hell out of trouble.

Forget the nuclear nightmare and the ecological armageddon.

We're going to bore ourselves to death. I can't wait for the Brave New World of humorless, uptight drones living in constant fear of saying or doing the wrong thing.

Here's a novel idea... why don't we all start cutting each other some slack?

Should Hillary get an entire career of public service trashed because of flying into Bosnia under sniper fire?

No, she's too smart and she's worked too hard for too long for too many good causes to deserve that.
Sure enough, one of the leading early warning voices about the Taliban is heading the State Dept.

Favreau, should get some slack. Maybe he should just go hat in hand and make an apology. I want the freaking You Tube of her ripping his head off and leaving his torso jerking around headless splurting blood.

Damn, there goes my job.

No, seriously Jon, she's a shot and a beer lady. I suggest one expensive tasty bottle of hooch and and a case of brew. Heads up... you should have taken volumes of pictures taking the cut out for dinner and a movie and hours of conversation before you got the ones taking liberty. That's just common sense.

Another heads up: her husband used to be President of the United States. I guess we'll be hearing about you next time in a few years when you turn up in the trunk of a car in longrterm parking at O'Hare Airport. Just kidding. They're awesome public servants. Just send the whiskey with an apology note.

(Holy f***! He is so dead!)

While typically I would agree that your basic premise has merit, which here was a bit graphic and somewhat off-target, I'll add that the reason this particular event bothered me personally was his behavior and obvious insolence toward women and the lack of respect which, by the way, all women deserve from men.

I suppose if you believe that it is okay for men (in this case a fairly young man) to demean women by assuming they're all no better than sex toys, even the more powerful in our political system, then perhaps your comments have merit. For me, I do not condone those behaviors, and believe that the more individuals side with you on these sensitive behaviors, the more problematic it will be.

I appreciate your argument, onlinebusinesswoman. We will never mend the oppression and hatred in the world without all of us learning to fully appreciate each other's humanity.

Certainly women and men ought to respect each other and themselves. Does that require a no tolerance policy for rude and loutish behavior? Let's teach the kid a lesson and move forward.

Favreau's job demanded he represent the campaign 24/7. Even though Obama For America clearly designated the importance of treating all opponents with respect, in the course of a tough and sometimes bitter Democratic Primary fight with a relentless opponent, Jon obviously had some kind of a mental breakdown. Perhaps there was even some amount of alcohol involved.

Maybe I'm lapsing into a boys will be boys argument here. It was never my intention to excuse what he did. I was just playing around with the entire situation off the top of my head late at night on the internet. I hope he gets another chance to apply his talent to a good cause. I hope I do also. I hope all of us do.

I watched this report and couldn't help but notice that Hillary Clinton made light of Favreau's gesture. The news anchor seemed offended that Hillary wasn't offended. Should I be offended that she was offended because Hillary wasn't offended?

The point is that yes, Favreau was out of line as a representative of Obama's campaign by groping the lifesize figure. No debate there. But has he shown a pattern that would indicate he is an old-school male chauvinist pig? I don't know the answer to that, but I do know this: If people want to find something to be offended by, they will. Remember the words of that great alcoholic writer, F. Scott Fitzgerald: Reserving judgment is a matter of infinite hope.
