Yet again do we see coverage of an event that the world society thinks is unfair. It has all the elements. The famous David and Goliath battle... David is Tibet, and Goliath is China. Or let us choose the star wars analogy: Darth Vader (China) and Luke Skywalker (Tibet). Now the issues in Tibet are what counts in the eyes of the world. Condemptions will fly around. Sadly I think it is because the country has a charismatic and charming figure in Dalai Lama. The situation is bad, but is it unique? Certainly not and similar situations goes on around the world constantly but have been chosen not to be seen.
When will we learn that genocides are equally bad wherever they happen? I have friends who have gotten killed in Kongo because the color of their t-shirt, got their kids beaten by sticks because their mom had the wrong ethniticity and they were at the wrong place at the wrong time. When will the global society start being hypocritics about what issues to cover? Maybe it is the very bad hangover by the western world for what we did to Africa during the colonization sitting with splines dividing a continent that was not ours, that we choose to turn our heads away. When will we as a global society realize that we have to address all the issues around the world and stop being selective about what we are choosing to see and not to see?
Sadly too many issues we cover is because the western world has something to gain in the mix - oil, other natural resources or prestige of a saint-like leader in this case Dalai Lama. Throw some monks in and you have a terrific story. I hear they are already casting the roles for the next movie on this conflict. :-) Zimbabwe will for all future be doomed as they lack any big natural resources...
It's a sad world we live in.
