Diagnosing Depression

Most of us usually confuse stress with depression since both have similar symptoms to some extend. Stress is when someone is tensed or worried about something or when he is tired to the extend where his body cannot take the pressure anymore and wants to relax. But depression, on the other hand, consists of reaching highest level of despair more than occasionally, creating mind block, where a person starts feeling numb and ignores things that he otherwise or normal doesn't.

Depression is not the case when you make a pout because of something you wanted and did not get. It refers to severe intensity of sadness where a person starts feeling helpless and has difficulty in taking interest in things or conversations and from here on, it leads to lack of concentration. So far, majority of patients who face depression, have trouble sleeping. It is a widespread, serious illness that is capable of causing 15% risk of suicide, heart attacks and stroke, if it is not treated properly.

It is not easy to diagnose depression since there are many types and symptoms to signify someone's depression. Low or changes in appetite, mind generating thoughts about suicide, isolation, being indifferent with a lot of people around, anxiety and/or panic attacks are the major signs of depression attacking in its initial stage. Although sometimes, it can also be inherited but it is not definite that a person with a history of biological family depression would have those genes as well or vice versa. Also, environment plays an important role in causing depression, like parents fighting or yelling at one another or getting separated can lead to children isolating themselves in their rooms which can further lead to the symptoms mentioned above. In adults, most likely reasons that lead to causing depression can be a stressful workplace, loss of a family member or a close bond or lack of social support, et cetera. People who are attacked by depression, take it as a step back by shutting down their life for outsiders in order to cope with the hard facts of life.

Research concludes that depression is one of the most common problems in the context of emotions in the United States but the good thing about it is that it can be treated. If you feel any of the above mentioned symptoms or you see them in someone you know, seeing a doctor at this stage is best, in order to cure it before it reaches the next stage. There are many doctors who treat depression but it is best to seek therapy and treatment from someone who is well trained in your specific case of depression.
