The Siamese Twins

Laura Williams, a brave 18 year-old teenager is all set to make medical history by becoming the world’s youngest mother to have conjoined twins. Laura and her 28 year-old husband, Aled found out that they are going to have conjoined twins at their 12th week scan. They also have an 18 month-old daughter Carly.

The couple went in to a state of shock when they found out that the twins are conjoined. The doctors told them that the twins will not survive more than 14 weeks of pregnancy and even if they do, that will cause a lot of complications for the twins as well as Laura throughout the rest of her pregnancy.

The couple did not comprehend the verdict of their doctor until they realized a little later that the doctors have returned their money and have not given them their twins’ picture. The silent verdict was to abort the twins and not even see the picture only to forget that any such thing ever happened to them.

Laura and Aled thought that the doctors were blunt to a point of callousness. After overcoming the initial shock, the couple decided to go with the pregnancy and bring the Siamese twins to world. Aled believes that if God wants these twins to be in this world, it will happen. If not, that’s what its’ got to be. For Laura, this step simply means that at least they tried!

Conjoined twins occur in about one in every 400,000 live births. Over the last 500 years, just over 600 surviving sets of conjoined twins have been recorded. Only about 5 percent of conjoined twins survive the first 24 hours but the twins in this case are joined from the stomach so they hold a good chance of survival, according to doctors.

Laura is now 35 weeks pregnant and she is resting at a hospital in Birmingham but will be transferred to a leading London hospital. She is expected to give birth to the Siamese twins this week by caesarean section. The couple wants to name them Hope and Faith.

“We called them Hope and Faith because I am always hoping that everything’s going to be alright and Mum says she’s got faith in it being all right,” said Laura.

The story of Laura and Aled’s strong faith that there is always hope is truly touching. No wonder there are a million people around who loose hope and faith when encountered with some of the most difficult situations in life but this couple is not only an exception but also an inspiration for millions around the world.

No one knows what this week will bring to the couple but all my prayers are with them. I hope they manage to bring both “Hope” and “Faith” to this world!
