Basra heading towards independent region
Independent High Commission for elections approved the request submitted by Basra MP Wael Abdul Latif to turn the province into an independent region after he gathered more than 32,000 approvals of citizens calling to form Basra region. Head of the Commission Judge Qassem Al Abbudi affirmed in a press conference that the Commission has charged the electoral administration in the province to announce the call to turn the province into an independent region within three days from the present date in order to draw the applications of citizens approving this call.
Al Abbudi clarified that the Commission has reviewed the names presented from Basra and dismissed 5500 names that do not comply with the appropriate conditions. Yet, it approved the request submitted by Basra residents as they exceeded the percentage determined by the law (2%).
