Spam watchdog spamcop.net is proud to inform us that the world on average has experienced a decline of 10-40 spam emails per second, a 66% reduction in spam levels.

This breakthrough is attributed to the busting of McColo Corporation which is housed in a shady building in downtown San Jose. Apparently the company has been hosting services for scores of spam perpetrators, primarily those pushing counterfeit drugs, spurious internet security products and pornography. The Corporation has been disconnected by major internet service providers ensuring its link to the outside world has been lost.

A private security researcher has been documenting the activity of the company and legal proceedings will probably be initiated particularly given the involvement in child pornography.

If spam distribution really is as centralized as this model, it may just be a matter of identifying the main perpetrators and uprooting them. Anything that reduces the amount of waste in our mailboxes is welcome.
