Charges: Two first-degree-murders

Patel, of the 1800 block of Harvest Lane in Glendale Heights, is accused of dousing his sons, Vishv, 7, and Om, 4, with gasoline and setting them on fire in a bathroom of their home on Nov. 18, 2007. Om died of his injuries in January, 2008 and Vishv died in February after both lingered for months in a Maywood hospital burn unit.

Patel also suffered serious burns in the fire and has heavy scars on his right hand.

Patel, a native of India who immigrated to the U.S. in 1992, contends that he was trying to commit suicide and that his sons' injuries and deaths were accidental. In a Tribune interview, he said he doesn't remember lighting the fire.

I respect a person's right to commit suicide, but if it's true that he burned his sons, I find comfort in imagining him roasting in hell. I don't know if he's Catholic, though
