Imagine for a moment that McCain was an African American and Obama a White Caucasion. Everything else -- their lives, their spouses, their academic records -- were as they are today. But their running mates too were switched.

Do that and you will see how the reengineered profiles play into racial stereotypes and the latest racism lurking amidst us. Paradoxically, at the same time, the racial stereotypes are also blown away.
