A pastor in Bridgeport, Conn., dropped dead in front of members of his congregation after admitting that he had an extramarital affair in the past. The incident took place March 9 in front of shocked parishioners, who believe that this was a form of swift and divine retribution for the pastor's illicit affair.
Bobby Davis, 72, had been carrying this weight around for years, and eventually got it off his chest before dying. Davis, the pastor and founder of Miracle Faith World Outreach Church in Bridgeport, asked his churchgoing folks to remain behind so that he could unburden himself. After everyone remained assembled, Davis admitted to the congregation that he had committed adultery.
“After the service on Sunday, the bishop’s family asked us to remain in the church and the bishop confessed to us something that happened long ago,” parishioner Judy Stovall said. “He wanted to come clean with all of us. He wanted to ask our forgiveness.”
Davis reportedly dropped to his knees minutes after he made his confession.
“We were shouting, ‘We forgive you, we love you,’ but the stress of all of it — he had a heart attack,” Stovall said. “I held his head as he lay on the floor… Our congregation is hurting now.”
After the incident, Davis was rushed to the Bridgeport Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The Office of the State Medical Examiner has, so far, not indicated a cause of death and the circumstances surrounding his death are still under investigation. A video of the incident, taken by a member of the church, is also being reviewed.
A spokesman for the Bridgeport Police Department William Kaempffer told reporters that the department responded to the church to assist medical treatment on Sunday. He added that the patient was transported to the hospital where he died. A detective has been assigned to the case who is investigating what happened and that an autopsy is scheduled for Tuesday to determine the cause of death.
It has also been reported that the pastor's wife and family actually coerced the public admission out of him and that he was under a lot of stress because of it. It has been reported by various news outlets that the pastor's wife was heard screaming at him, his sons hit him while one of the daughters poured a glass of water over his head. All of this eventually took a toll on him and he dropped dead.
