U.S. Director of National Intelligence Mike McConnell has voiced wariness at the increasing possibility of global conflict. He has identified China, Russia and India as increasingly voracious powers. He expects competition over the finite resources of the Earth to intensify in the coming decades and this should translate into more reason for warfare.
He sees economics and technology as the key drivers of power in the future. The trend of transfer of technology and investments from West to East should continue and fuel the Eastern appetite for more.
China in 2025 will be the world's largest economy, strongest military and most critical trade partner if current projections hold valid. India and Russia will be close behind.
McConell's concern is that burgeoning populations will engender tensions which will find an outlet in physical battles for supremacy.
McConell stopped short of explicitly labeling an "axis of evil" but hinted that collaboration between the three aforementioned countries was likely given geographical proximity and chances for strategic collaboration.
McConell's current emphasis is on advising the US Government on combating terrorism. He will be responsible for briefing the new American President on issues of geopolitical significance and security.
