Illinois woman Courtney Coats still hasn't been located -- and she vanished over two weeks ago. The circumstances of her disappearance haven't been deeply detailed in the media, but one of her loved ones -- a close friend of hers -- reached out to me today in hopes of getting more public attention to the case. The friends and family of this missing woman have put together a Facebook page, and it is here where up-to-date information is being shared about the case while the media continues to ignore it.
What happened to this missing woman? A friend who wishes to remain anonymous (who reached out to me via Facebook) had the following to say:
"I am unsure of why the media hasn't done anything since the 26th (of Nov.), but she's now been missing 16 days! The police released a brief statement stating their entire detective unit has been activated for her and her phone last pinged in West Alton the day she was missing."
The fact that her phone was last pinged on the day she went missing indicates to me that she may not have gone missing at all -- if you know what I mean. Here are some questions to consider, knowing this information:
It's very easy to speculate that domestic violence could have played a role in this woman's disappearance. The boyfriend openly admits that the two had fought, and that she "told him off" and stormed out with her bag. These circumstances can be mirrored with numerous other missing persons cases in which the significant other ended up being responsible -- and it's just a statistical likeliehood. Coats's loved ones acknowledge that she is recovering from a drug addiction, but her boyfriend said she was "f'd up". So what's the truth?
There is also the possibility that someone preyed on this woman while she was out walking in the middle of the night allegedly "f'd up" as her estranged boyfriend claims. Someone could have picked her up with ill intentions, and anything could have happened. There are numerous people missing in rural Illinois, so it's not out of the question to speculate that there are more than a couple predators in this state. Even one of Courtney's high school friends is missing!
Regardless of the odds of stranger abduction: I can't help but feel suspicious of Courtney Coats's ex-boyfriend. It's just too convenient that she vanished without a trace after leaving him with a bag packed. Neither her or this bag have been found, and it's presumed that she'd get in touch with friends and family sometime after leaving this man -- but she has not and all signs of life ceased on the day that she was last seen. That, my friends, is far too suspicious to ignore.
As for her loved ones, they are doing the best they can to keep together for this missing woman. The Facebook page dedicated to the search for Courtney Coats is well over 1,000 followers strong -- and growing -- but more people need to be reached with this story. Another loved one said the following:
"I am fearful for her safety and wellbeing. There are a lot of people missing in this area. One of the people missing is Jared Hanna from her high school - small rural area, Jerseyville, Il. He has been missing 2 years! We want to hold a vigil and foot search for her. For her and her boyfriend to break up, that was ordinary. Her vanishing is out of the ordinary. She contacted me often but not for the past few months."
These words indicate that the general feeling is that something bad happened to this missing woman. She could be the victim of foul play, and the mainstream media is doing pretty much nothing to get her story out there. With so many people missing and murdered in the state of Illinois, it just feels shameful to continue ignoring these cases.
