Julianne Hough chose the character of Crazy Eyes from Orange Is the New Black as her Halloween getup and donned a blackface to go along with it.

Hough probably did not have any idea what criticism she would have to face for dressing up as Orange Is the New Black character Crazy Eyes. The criticism came not for her choice of clothes; rather, for darkening her skin color and hair to go along with the costume. Hough apparently did not take into account whenever white entertainers portray themselves as black people, it causes uproar in the media and among the general public. As soon as her pictures from a Halloween party surfaced, there came a backlash from people on social media sites. In most of these comments, people criticized Hough for being insensitive and showing lack of judgement for donning black makeup.

Julianne Hough, best known for her role in Safe Haven, attended the Casmigos Tequila Halloween party in Beverly Hills along with six other female friends, who were also dressed as inmates, and a male friend, who was dressed as a police officer. Hough wore an orange prison suite to depict the character of Crazy Eyes, complete with a dog-tag with the name Crazy Eyes written on it. However, it was not her clothes; rather, her makeup that caused the uproar. Hough used makeup to change her skin color from white to black. The makeup that she used is called blackface and it is a form of theatrical makeup that performers use to darken their skin to create the stereotypical caricature of an African-American person.

After Hough's pictures surfaced on social media sites, people started criticizing her and then she responded by posting an apology.

The actress tweeted, “I am a huge fan of the show Orange is the New black, actress Uzo Aduba, and the character she created. It certainly was never my intention to be disrespectful or demeaning to anyone in any way. I realize my costume hurt and offended people and I truly apologize.”

While a lot of her fans accepted her apology, others were not very forgiving. A user by the nickname of @TheMadamEditor responded to Hough’s tweet, writing, “here comes the BULLSH*T. Ignorance is not bliss. YOU SHOULD KNOW BETTER!!”

This entire hue and cry created on Hough's costume choice is surely going to make the celebrities think twice about their choices of costumes for Halloween.
