I have been a free-choice supporter all of my adult life. As a young adult female, I lived at a time before abortions became legal in the United States and I was exposed to what lengths some women took to abort their own fetuses. The history of what women endured prior to the legalization of abortion is common knowledge and yet, the chilling near-death and death experiences of far too many young women intent on ending an unwanted pregnancy falls on deaf ears. It is clear that the lives of pregnant young women are a less valuable commodity to pro-life advocates than the lives of unborn babies. Or, are the lives of unborn, viable babies really of primary importance to pro-life advocates?

It’s one thing to advocate for the lives of the innocent and fragile unborn, but where are these same pro-life advocates after these children are born? Are they lined up at the adoption agencies willing and able to adopt one of these children that they so desperately needed to be born? Do these advocates ensure that children born into families where they are unwanted aren’t physically and mentally abused? Where are those pro-life advocates to ensure that the tens of thousands of unwanted children that are born in this country are cared for, loved, guided and educated just as if they had been born and received by loving families who wanted them?

The sad fact is that few pro-life advocates are interested in the welfare of these children after they are born. Many often spout biblical references to bolster their position when is a heated discussion with supporters of pro-choice, but few step up to the plate and adopt an unwanted child, especially a child that is a minority.

So, the question becomes: if you support pro-life but don’t care about the welfare of the child after it’s born, are you really a pro-life advocate?

I believe that few pro-life advocates have actually seen or care to the horrors that many unwanted babies and children endure. Babies are scalded, used as if they were ash trays and many are simply used as punching bags. As a pro-life advocate, can you morally justify allowing such actions to happen repeatedly to defenseless and innocent beings? Well, the truth of the matter is that children in this country, much less the world at large are routinely brutalized by adults. Where is the Christian doctrine of “Vengeance is mine saith the Lord,” when pro-life advocates vote to legislate what happens to a total stranger’s body or blithely imperil the well-being of an unwanted new-born?

Unwanted babies still end up in trash cans and apparently such a fate for an unwanted, live birth is an acceptable end for pro-life advocates. The question of choice requires someone to be ultimately responsible for their personal choices. The pro-life movement appears to only endorse life BEFORE birth and have little interest in that life after birth. Just how is that type of limited thinking responsible? The point is, if you’re a true pro-life supporter, then support all life. If you want to ensure that all babies are born after conception, then you also have to ensure that those babies will not only be born but they will be placed in environment will they will grow and thrive. If pro-life advocates can’t extend their desires to protect the “unborn” to also include the “now born,” then the movement and the people that populate it are simply people who want to manipulate other people’s lives without a personal investment on their part.
