Yesterday morning, sounds of gun fire and mortar explosions shocked the city of Zamboanga. According to reports, rogue members of the Moro National Liberation Front or MNLF lay siege to the city with the plans to march to City Hall and raise their flags.
Members of the Philippine National Police (PNP), Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP and the Philippine Navy were able to meet and the fire fight began. During the early stages of the battle, one Navy personnel was shot while several were wounded. The MNLF also took 30 people as hostages all the while making them into human shields. All works and classes were suspended in the city as the fighting raged on. Gunfire and explosion could be heard everywhere as residents were moved to a much safer location. According to reports, the rogue group planned to derail the peace talks in Mindanao which is already hanging on a thin thread.
