Two of's sons are in legal trouble after they allegedly assaulted a 19-year-old on his front porch. The Herald Times Online shared the details of how Speck Mellencamp, 18, and Hud Mellencamp, 19, are facing battery charges now.
The Herald Times Online indicates that Speck and Hud will be turning themselves into authorities now that the judge has approved the charges of battery resulting in serious bodily injury. The charges stem from a July incident where the two, along with a third teen, allegedly beat up man as he sat on the porch of his home. The third teen charged is , the son of , the Indiana University basketball coach.
The allegations are that the three punched, kicked and stomped on the victim, then knocked him off the porch. The victim's roommates intervened, and the trio of alleged attackers ran from the scene. Witnesses indicate the trio did not say anything to the victim first, they simply walked up on the porch and started attacking. The three allegedly continued to kick and hit the victim as he was down on the ground.
Speck and Hud Mellencamp are said to have told authorities that they attacked the victim as a response to Speck being hit in the face at a party earlier in the evening. Speck said he had tried to stop two girls who were fighting over him, and he was pushed and hit by a man. Later, claiming he was not thinking straight, he returned to the home where the party was and then attacked the man on the porch. It seems uncertain whether the man he attacked was even involved in the initial altercation, as some seem to believe he was not even at the party that night.
Hud Mellencamp says that he and Smith were not involved in the fight that left the victim with cuts that needed stiches and even facial fractures. Witnesses seem to indicate otherwise. It is worth noting, as can be seen in the video above, Hud Mellencamp is a trained boxer.
As online commenters and the Herald Times have noted, John Mellencamp appeared on David Letterman's show in June sporting a black eye. He explained that he got it from his 18-year-old son as he sharing, “My son and I had words and he got a punch in and I didn't.” The battery charge the young men face is a felony, and many online commenters are hoping there are some serious consequences attached if the witness and victim statement details hold up regarding what happened in the attack.
