Child support magistrate Lu Ann Ballew trampled all over the 1st Amendment rights of mother Jaleesa Martin when she ordered that she change the name of her seven-month-old son. The zealot judge took issue with the child's name being "Messiah" and declared that the name is "an earned title" and that it has only been earned by Jesus Christ. Apparently this imbecile forgot that she lives in a theocracy. Fortunately Jaleesa is appealing this order -- and in my opinion she should sue the pants off this judge and demand that she step down from the bench since she is unable to rule fairly.
The child's name has been changed, for now, to be Martin DeShawn McCullough -- a fine name indeed, but definitely not the one the parents chose for the lad. It's downright insulting that this judge has taken it upon herself to dole out religious control in her little jurisdiction in Tennessee -- but on a federal level what she has done is likely very illegal.
Jaleesa Martin would be wise to obtain the help of ACLU to pursue this as far as it can go. What Lu Ann Ballew has done is a display of the Christian priviliege that exists in this country and it's about time that ends. This is not a Christian nation and the citizens of this country are not held under biblical law. Our 1st Amendment prevents people from doing exactly what Ballew has done. This woman deserves to lose her job.
