Police are still searching for Daphne Viola Webb, and as far as recent reports indicate the Amber Alert is still in effect. However, her father has been arrested -- according to the Oakland Tribune and numerous other reports. John Anthony Webb has been arrested on suspicions of child endangerment, which could have something to do with the manner in which little Daphne vanished, or it could be related to it much more closely.
It should be noted that John is not a suspect in the disappearance of his daughter, which indicates that officials are still on the lookout for the mysterious woman accused of kidnapping the child. There are no clarifications to offer on these so called child endangerment charges, so it would be interesting to find out if they have anything at all to do with Daphne's disappearance.
John Anthony Webb has been described as an "all around great buy" by at least one of his neighbors. He also already has adult children who he raised and reportedly taught martial arts. So this does, on the surface, seem like a situation with a doting father. It would be hard to speculate any involvement with his own daughter's disappearance. Nonetheless, these scenarios do in fact happen.
This case is immediately similar to the disappearance -- and presumed death -- of Bianca Jones. Her father reported her missing in 2011, claiming that he was carjacked with her in the vehicle. Her body has never been located, but he was convicted of murder via child abuse very recently. It's believed that he may have beaten little Bianca to death over difficulties with potty training.
Another similar case -- involving potty training, no less -- is the disappearance of Bryeon Hunter. His mother reported him missing after claiming that an Hispanic woman attacked her and took him. It was later found out that the boy's mother and her boyfriend beat the child to death after his failure to potty train the way they wanted. They left the child to die on their bathroom floor, stuffed him into a backpack and then threw it into a river.
The course of the disappearance of Daphne Viola Webb is suspiciously similar to the aforementioned cases. Still, it's important to hold onto at least the possibility that this little girl is alive and being kept by someone who didn't have entirely nefarious motives. Otherwise, the next few updates in this story might be heartbreaking.
