A hilarious parody voiceover of a cooking segment is beginning to go viral on Youtube, poking fun at the famed chef's public fall from grace. In the video titled "African American Cooking with Paula Deen," actual footage of a segment with Paula and a friend of hers is used with hilarious voice dubs that are timed almost perfectly for an authentic feel. Be warned, though, as the video does depict a sensitive topic.
If you haven't heard about the controversy by now: Paula Deen has been fired by the Food Network over her alleged repeated use of racial epithets as well as other generally insensitive behavior. Even after a seemingly heartfelt (albeit rehearsed) apology, Food Network still won't rehire the scorned cook.
As if she wasn't in deep enough butter right now, she has become the focus of many-a-joke, especially insensitive ones -- which everyone knows are the funniest. The hilarious viral video isn't the only time she's been made fun of in this manner and it likely won't be the last. This also isn't her first bit of controversy.
Paula Deen is known for hiding her diabetes diagnosis from the public while still promoting and preparing fatty and unhealthy foods on her popular cooking show. This angered popular chef and travel personality Anthony Bourdain, who referred to Deen as a "greedy" person, among other comments. The foodie community in general hasn't been too kind to Deen ever since DiabeteGate. So it seems that this whole racism controversy is the icing on the cake for those who already oppose her.
As if these parody videos weren't enough insult to injury. It's now being reported that there are more allegations against the woman's "empire." In fact, this source says that her use of the N-word is "the smallest portion of this." That's probably why Deen's camp wanted to have the deposition and all details of the lawsuit hidden from the public. It's too bad for her (and her tarnished image) that the judge refused to place a gag order over her case.
It doesn't really seem that Paula Deen is truly a racist. She may be insensitive as part of the aging white privilige, Southern bred. She likely really doesn't intend actual harm to anyone, and all of this fallout she is experiencing is pretty rough. It's definitely a learning experience, though, and that is something that needs to be seen so situations like these don't happen again. In the meantime, the parodies and memes that result from these situations are truly a hoot.
