Slim Whitman - A Lonesome heart

Early country music star Slim Whitman died in a Jacksonville, Fla. hospital at the age of 90 as a result of heart failure.

Whitman was best known for his falsetto singing and yodeling in his songs.

Whitman learned to play the guitar — despite have lost two fingers on his left hand in an accident — while serving in the Navy during World War II. Whitman's first band was the Variety Rhythm Boys, but it was his radio voice that got Whitman his break on the record charts in 1952. He also played baseball with the Plant City Berries at this time.

Whitman scored his first big hit single with "Indian Love Call" that made it into the top 10 on the US Country Chart, the US Pop Chart and in the United Kingdom. While he scored numerous hits throughout his career, Whitman was less successful after 1955 due to a change in musical tastes among fans. However, Whitman's biggest selling album came when he took to the television airwaves to hawk an "All My Best" compilation. To date, the album has sold over one million copies and counting.

After a number of compilation albums, Whitman recorded his final studio album — "Twilight on the Trail" — in 2010.

Whitman became a member of the “Louisiana Hayride” radio show and later joined the Grand Ole Opry. He became the first country star to perform at the London Palladium. Whitman saw much better success in his career in the United Kingdom — where he was considered a music pioneer — than he did in his homeland of the US.

He was born Ottis Dewey Whitman Jr. on January 23,1924 in Tampa, Fla. Whitman was "discovered" by Colonel Tom Parker — Elvis Presley's manager. After signing his first record contract, Whitman changed his name to Slim.

Whitman is predeceased by his wife Geraldine "Jerry" of 67 years; whom he married when he was 17 and she was 15. He is survived by his children Sharon and Byron, two grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
