Britain has made an important stride towards its announced goal of generating 15% of its energy needs from renewable sources by 2015. 45,000 homes will be powered by wind and hydro-electric sources situated across the historic canals and rivers.
This will be achieved via 50 wind turbines and small hydro-schemes over the next 5 years. The 1 million Pounds Sterling raised in this manner can contribute to maintaining and repairing 2200 miles of historic waterways including locks, bridges and rivers.
The challenge now is to locate the turbines and hydel projects along the waterways in such a manner that they cause minimal disruption in the natural environment. Potential spots are still being analyzed.
There are plans to expand the project to 230,000 homes by 5 years.
