In the beach front city of Santa Monica, California, a man ran amok and at least five people are dead and several others injured, police said. The attack began at a house and culminated on a college campus where the gunman was shot dead by the police in the library.

Originally, the death tolls were six people, police reported, but later corrected it to five people dead, including the shooter. Witnesses described the gunman was in his late 20s and had carried an assault-type rifle.

Meantime, President Barack Obama was at a fundraiser not far from where the shooting occurred just before noon on Friday. The Secret Service, who were protecting the US president, said the incident did not affect his schedule.

Witnesses said, the gunman who was in black attire and wearing an ammunition belt and bullet-proof jacket, opened fire at the house and the property was then ablaze though it is unclear how the fire started.

It was reported that the first two victims were the gunman’s father and brother. A neighbor Jerry Rathner witnessed the shooting from her veranda and told Associated Press that the gunman walked to the street corner, aimed his gun at a driver and ordered her to pull over. He then waved his hand to another car driven by a female to slow down but fired into the car multiple times. Rathner rushed to the victim to help her and the female driver had a shoulder injury.

Ms. Rathner said that the man fired three to four shots into the car. The man’s violent behavior moved to a street corner near Santa Monica College where the suspect open fire at passing vehicles, authorities said.

The suspect then gained access in the campus where he is said to have shot a woman in the head as he made his way toward the college library, where students were reviewing for final exams.

The gunman entered the college library and fired at people but did not hit anyone, Police Chief Jaqueline Seabrooks said. The police barged in and immediately engaged the suspect and was shot and killed on the spot, she said.

A second man dressed also in black with words printed “life is a gamble” on the back of his shirt was taken into custody by authorities. Chief Seabrooks said that they didn’t believe that the suspect who was killed operated alone.

Taken to the Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center, were three women, one patient had died, one was undergoing surgery and the third was in a serious condition, a doctor said. Three more patients were brought to the same Medical Center to be treated for minor injuries.
