18-year-old charged for lesbian relationship or for sex with a minor?

The worldwide Web is alight with this Florida case and those who are outraged that the teen is being charged, believe the parents did so because they’re upset their daughter was “turned Gay” by the relationship.

Cries of discrimination, bias and bigotry on the part of the court and parents of the “victim,” are being levied by critics and though studies show that in 78 countries, 'blind hatred' still persists against homosexuals, is that what’s happening in this case or is there more than meets the eye?

Kaitlyn Hunt, 18, was expelled from school and charged with statutory rape for having a sexual relationship with a 14-year-old girl at her Sebastian River High school.

Her mother Kelly Hunt Smith then took to a Facebook page called “free Kate, stop the hate” dedicated to Hunt, to call the school “bigoted, religious zeolites (sic) that see being gay as a sin and wrong, and they blame my daughter." Adding that Hunt and the other teen had "a mutual consenting relationship."

Despite the outrage, petitions and the Facebook group dedicated to "freeing Kate and stopping the hate," the court is pursuing the charges. The 18-year-old 12 grader was forced to finish her last senior year at another school and reportedly faces two years of house arrest and one year probation under a plea deal.

This does sound like a witch-hunt with overly harsh punishment but there is also a legal element to this case. Cries of homophobia aside, would there be this amount of outrage if the couple was heterosexual and the 18-year-old was male?

With the fight for equality, comes equal treatment under the law as well and gay couples have to take the good with the bad and the ugly. If this was a young man having sex with a 14-year-old girl, would there be Facebook pages dedicated to helping free him of all charges?

At the same time, if this was a boy, would the "victim's" parents be pushing for charges to be upheld?

I personally do not think there is a vast emotional difference between an 18-year-old and a 17-year-old and so our statutory rape laws may need to be revised, but equality means just that—we all get treated alike under the current laws of the land.

What do you think of the case: homophobic witch-hunt or the law applied fairly?

Is this a 'hate case?' Was Florida teen charged because she is a lesbian or because she had sex with a minor?
