The out-of-the-ordinary is frequently the ordinary in Berkeley, Calif., but sometimes even the unusual is so extraordinary that you just have to stop and take a picture.
This shot was taken on the sidewalk outside a Berkeley shop on a warm day in June of 2008. From what the photographer could gather, the shopkeeper was in the process of cleaning, and the head - nearly five feet tall - had been on display in a window.
Notice how the angle of the strap over the mouth makes it appear as if she is holding on with her lips.
If you're thinking the face looks familiar, that's because it has its origins in one of the most familiar, reassuring paintings of the 20th Century, "American Gothic" (1930) by Grant Wood.
You'd think it a place like Berkeley, one would be more likely to run across a five-foot tall Campbell's soup can, but such are the mysteries of art.
