Five persons died were confirmed by disaster authorities in Albay province after Mayon Volcano was rocked by explosions at around 8 a.m. Tuesday. A tour guide was among the casualties and 15 more persons needed to be rescued, Governor Joey Salceda, head of the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction Management Council (PDRRMC).
There were 27 persons who scaled Mayon, Salceda said, among them foreigners, when a “phreatic explosion”, happened, described as ashes and rocks discharged by the volcano. The said explosion was steam-driven, Alex Baloloy, volcanologist of the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology, said. He advised the public not to venture into the 6-kilometer Permanent Danger Zone around Mayon, though he maintained the alert level remained at nil.
