Jeremiah Wright:

The Chicago Sun-Times is reporting that the daughter of Rev. Jeremiah Wright, President Barack Obama’s former pastor, was indicted today by the U.S. Attorney's office for the Northern District of Illinois. Jeri L. Wright has been charged with money laundering and lying to federal agents.

The charges grow out of Ms. Wright's alleged participation in a scheme allegedly conceived and orchestrated by former Country Club Hills, Illinois Police Chief Regina Evans and her husband. The fraud involved the supposed misappropriation by the threesome of a $1.25 million Illinois state grant.

Jeri Lynn Wright is 47-years-old and lives in the Chicago suburb of Hazel Crest, Illinois. She faces two counts of money laundering, two counts of making false statements to federal law enforcement officers, and seven counts of giving false testimony before a grand jury.

How well we remember Rev. Jeremiah Wright. Over the years, I have, in fact, attended Trinity United Church on Chicago's South Side on many occasions, and always thoroughly enjoyed his sermons. I do not ever recall seeing the Obamas in attendance at any time. I do recall meeting Jeri Wright once.

It was Rev. Wright's often incendiary preaching over at least a twenty-year period that eventually got him in “trouble” with some dogged Obamaphobes – mainly so-called conservative media types – throughout the country.

One of the many reasons I was always happy to attend Trinity was because for years, until 1991, right smack dab on the front lawn of the church was a giant poster emblazoned with these words: “FREE SOUTH AFRICA!' My kind of church, I thought. I knew I was in the right place.

Rev. Wright's adherence and teaching of “liberation theology,” that is, the use of the gospels to actually free -- liberate -- the oppressed, was and remains a singular vehicle by which Christianity is rendered meaningful, relevant, practical, powerful, and even revolutionary among the faithful.

Liberation theology takes an unvarnished, unsanitized, cold-eyed look at the “history” of the world. It sizes up that history against the teachings of Christ and determines whether His “social justice” example and message are being practiced rather than merely preached in today's society.

Liberation theology condemns any and all institutions, organizations, nations or societies which do not meet this standard. Thus, when Rev. Wright “damned” America for its original sin of slavery, and its continuing (to this day) disregard of Christ's “least of these,” the right wing called him everything but a child of God.

Now that Rev. Wright daughter has been indicted by the feds, let me save the right wingers the trouble of bringing on their pent-up glee at this sad report. Your condemnations and recriminations would probably sound something like this:

1) I told you so;

2) We're not surprised;

3) Serves him right;

4) The apple doesn't fall far from the tree;

5) This is what happens to “traitors”;

6) Where's the indictment against the reverend himself;

7) Where's the indictment against Obama?

8) Let's take bets on how long it will take for Obama to pardon her?

I am sure I have missed at least a couple. But these should suffice – at least until we get more detail about the young lady's troubles.
