The US Geological Survey measured the quake at magnitude 6.0 and stated it struck at 10:03 am (0203 GMT), 48 kilometres (30 miles) east of Nantou district in mid Taiwan at a profundity of 20.7 kilometres.
Taiwan's midway climate department put the magnitude at 6.1, stating it was the greatest quake not long from now and was felt over the island. Five post-quake tremors measured from 3.7-4.3 in magnitude happened in two hours after the principle tremor, it stated.
