A 13-month-old baby was shot in the face and killed Thursday and his mother was wounded in the leg as she pushed him along a Brunswick, Ga., street in a stroller. Brunswick is located on Georgia’s east coast about 30 miles north of Jacksonville, Fla..

Brunswick Police Chief Tobe Green has said that no motive for the attack had been determined, but MSNBC reports this morning that a failed robbery was most likely why this child and his mother were victimized.

The two would-be robbers were barely teenagers or even younger, the mother said. She also said that she did not recognize them. According to MSNBC, the assailants approached the mother and child and demanded money. When she had none to give them, they killed her son and shot her.

Again, the child was shot in the face. He died at the scene. The mother was shot in the leg and taken to Southeast Georgia Health System’s Brunswick hospital.

Neither the mother nor her son have been identified, as of this writing. She, however, has described the shooter as a black male, 13 to 15 years old, 5-foot-7 to 5-foot-9, slender and wearing a red shirt. Another, even younger, black male, was with him -- possibly 10 to 12 years old and wearing a black shirt.

The gunfire erupted at about 9:15 a.m. as the victims strolled along London Street in Brunswick’s historic Old Town district.

The mother and child had just left their rental home around the corner on Union Street, police said. Neighbors said they did not know her.

“The situation we had here this morning is quite disturbing,” Green said.

Every police agency in Glynn County, and many outside the county, sent or offered to send help in the door-to-door search for the suspects.

Some of these law enforcement entities include: The interagency Brunswick-Glynn County Violent Crimes Task Force; the Camden County Sheriff’s Office (including a tracking dog team and other deputies); and even the Georgia Department of Natural Resources (DNR) rangers – with helicopter -- were also in on the search. And, four Georgia Bureau of Investigation agents worked the crime scene.

“Whatever we can do to help the city, that’s what we’re going to do,” Glynn County Sheriff Neal Jump said.

By nightfall, residents began to emerge from their homes, most of them walking dogs.

Brunswick Mayor Bryan Thompson was visibly angry as he spoke at a news conference today. He called upon every citizen who may have information about this crime to come forward.

“If you know something and don’t call, you are complicit in this crime,” he said.

Glynn Academy High School is two blocks north of the crime scene. It was locked down immediately following the shooting. Glynn Middle School, several blocks south, was put on alert, Glynn County schools spokesman Jim Weidhaas said.

“It’s just a preventative measure,” he said. “We’re doing what we can to keep the students and staff over there safe.”

As school let out at Glynn Academy, a heavy police presence was evident. They were patrolling the school grounds and surrounding neighborhood searching for the suspects.

A $10,000 reward has been offered for information leading to the arrest and conviction in the shootings, Green said.

Anyone with information should call Silent Witness at (912) 267-5516 or the county police hotline at (912) 264-1333.

Callers may remain anonymous, a point Thompson emphasized.

“I can guarantee you anonymity,’’ he said.
