Friday Sept. 26 will be a strange, but wonderful, anniversary for Jake, the 28 month old, 14-pound terrier who is the adoptive "son" of Tessalee and Greg LeNoir. It's the day that he was saved, literally, from the jaws of death. Those jaws belonged to a 5 foot shark in the Florida Keys.
Greg told the Miami Herald that he concluded the creature was either a bull shark or lemon shark after describing it to local fishermen. It attacked little Jake as he was taking his daily swim at the Worldwide Sportsman's Bayside Marina pier in Islamorada, FL.
'I clenched my fists and dove straight in with all my strength, like a battering ram,'' LeNoir, 53, told the Herald Sunday, reliving the frightening ordeal. ``I hit the back of the shark's neck. It was like hitting concrete.''
Jake, described as "a fast and fearless swimmer" by his owners, quickly swam to shore after being freed from the shark's jaws. Amazingly little Jake sustained very few injuries considering the ordeal he went through, having the "upside down smile" of tooth punctures patched up at VCA Upper Keys Animal Hospital in Islamorada, FL. Amazing because, as his owner described it ''The shark put almost all of Jake in his mouth, except for his head and three of his legs,''
''Jake's doing great,'' LeNoir's brother, Phillip, told the Herald Monday. ``And I still can't believe my brother jumped in the water and punched a shark.''
