
Referee controversy surrounds the Champions League last 16 second leg between Manchester United vs Real Madrid game as the Blancos beat United 2-1 on Tuesday night at Old Trafford. Real Madrid advanced in the quarterfinal through 3-2 on aggregate.
The controversy began on the dismissal of Nani, with United leading 1-0 through a Sergio Ramos goal at the start of the second half. Nani was harshly sent off by the referee for a raised boot as he challenged Alvaro Arbeloa for a loose ball. No doubt it is a foul but Old Trafford erupted in disgust when Turkish referee Cakir showed a straight red into Nani's face.
Manchester played 10-man crew as Real Madrid scored twice in succession since then through Luka Modric and Cristiano Ronaldo to make it 2-1.
Defense work well for both teams with no score registered in the first 45-minutes of play. Ronaldo and Xavi Alonso were shut out as Giggs and Rafael on Madrid star doubling while Welbeck stifle Alonso’s passing. However, United’s Van Persie and Vidic best chances to score fell as well with Blanco's defense.
The second half saw United take 1-0 at 48-minute as Nani’s cross was diverted past Lopez in the crowded box but the final touch came off Sergio Ramos drilling a goal. The driving run also saw Welbeck and Van Persie finishes blocked.
Moments later Real Madrid bounced back as Modric launched a great kick firing off the post from just outside the box. The ball hit the pole and bounce back into the net. At 69-minute, Ronaldo chance to score against his former team was so slim but somehow the ball find him as he slides the ball in a corner.
Madrid victory over United go through after beating Barcelona twice in a week. Liga race is on as well as Copa del Rey title but the priority is Champions League trophy for Los Blancos.
