Oscar Pistorius’ brother, Carl Pistorius, is facing culpable homicide charges for the 2008 death of a woman motorcyclist.
Oscar himself is facing homicide charges for the death of his girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp.
Carl is facing charge of unlawful, negligent killing for a 2008 road death, in which a woman motorcyclist lost her life. The accident took place in Vanderbijlpark, which is located south of Johannesburg.
The charges for "culpable homicide" were dropped after the initial investigation of the case, but they were reinstated again and now will be challenged in court. According to reports, after the accident, Carl’s blood test was done to find out if he was under the influence of any substance or alcohol, but after finding out that his blood reports were normal, the case against him was dropped.
The law in South Africa specifically makes provision to allow charges to be dropped and then to be reinstated as a result of further investigation.
The case was reopened just one day before Oscar was released on bail. Carl appeared quietly in court last Thursday and his next appearance is scheduled for the end of March.
Carl's case is a new tragedy for the Pistorius family, as they are already dealing with Oscar’s murder charges. It was also revealed that Hilton Botha, the chief police investigator of Oscar’s case, is himself facing charges of seven counts of attempted murder for shooting at a vehicle with seven passengers. Since the revelation, Hilton Botha has been removed from the Pistorius investigation and in his place, a new chief detective has been appointed.
The Pistorius family is under a lot of pressure these days and Saturday, Carl’s Twitter account was hacked, after which, the Pistorius family has canceled all of their social media accounts.
Oscar was charged with the murder of his girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp, who was killed on Feb. 14., but has been granted bail. He still maintains his innocence, saying that he accidentally killed Steenkamp thinking that she was a burglar who broke into his house. The trial will further determine what will become of the famous Paralympics winner and his future.
