The first person to win the best actor prize three times is no other else, the runaway favorite British actor who played the role in Steven Spielberg’s Lincoln, Daniel Day-Lewis. He has made Oscars history.
Daniel Day-Lewis’ Oscar triumph puts him on top of Hollywood legends Jack Nicholson, Marlon Brando, Dustin Hoffman and Tom Hanks who all have two best actor wins to their name.
The Briton said that he really didn't know how any of this happened. He does know he have received much more than his fair share of good fortune in his life.
For the best picture, it was Ben Affleck's Iran-set rescue thriller Argo won the prize.
In the White House, First Lady Michelle Obama in a lived broadcast joined Jack Nicholson to help present the best picture prize at the end of the night.
It was known that Argo is the first best picture winner that have no simultaneous nomination for best director since 1989's Driving Miss Daisy. Regardless Affleck's oversight from the best director category, the film had been widely-picked to take the top prize.
George Clooney and Grant Heslov, Affleck’s co-producers were also there to accept their awards and Affleck paid honor to the “genius” Steven Spielberg who was overwhelmed in the same category.
For the best actress, the Oscar was won by Jennifer Lawrence, 22, for her role as a troubled young widow in Silver Linings Playbook. It was her first Oscar win.
As for the best supporting actress, the Oscar was taken away by Anne Hathaway for her role as tragic factory worker Fantine in movie musical Les Miserables. She too, it was her first Oscar.
British singer Adele won the Oscar for best original song for her Bond theme Skyfall.
Taiwanese-born director, Ang Lee won his second Oscar for directing Life of Pi, about a boy stranded in a lifeboat with a Bengal tiger.
Tarantino picked up the original screenplay prize for Django Unchained..
Paperman won the best short animated film category, while Pixar's Scottish adventure Brave won best animated feature.
The Oscar was hosted by Seth MacFarlane.
