Confusion and fear are some of the negative emotions that start to trigger majority of teenage girls in Memphis as soon as they reached the age of puberty.

During this stage, they start to experiencing bodily changes that make them feel awkward about themselves. Actually, these are caused by lack of information and knowledge since they don’t know how to interpret what’s really happening with their reproductive health.

American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists states that teenage girls ages 13 to 15 should schedule their initial gynecological visit and to differentiate what’s normal from not.

Taking their first gynecological visit is important to prevent any reproductive health concerns from worsening in the near future.

Issues Concerning Teenage Pregnancy

Based on the study of Urban Child Institute, pregnancy is one of the most aggravating issues that every teenage in Memphis, Tennessee are facing. As a matter of fact, last year, 35% of teenage pregnancy was noted among th teenage girls in the said state.

In an article, Dr. Shanon Malone, a Mid-south, Memphis based OB-GYN stressed that initial gynecological visit is important so that girls will be aware of of the consequences of teenage pregnancy. Moreover, it is an effort established by every medical practitioners to educate teenagers about early pregnancy.

Teenage Girls’ First Gynecological Visit

Young girls need not to worry or fear or worry about their initial appointment with a gynecologist because this does not necessarily mean an in-depth examination.

Basically, girls’ menstrual flow is analyzed and if in case that she is sexually active or just gave birth, a Pap smear procedure is suggested according to experienced Memphis’ gynecologists.

Initial gynecological visit is a very sensitive matter to teenagers. In this regard, parents should be involved in their first visit. In addition, gynecologists are strictly not allowed to tell their situation aside from immediate family members.

OB-GYNs should practice assurance of full confidentiality so that teenagers will feel at ease and more confident about their health backgrounds and habits.

In some cases, there are teens who don’t want to be accompanied by mothers during their initial check-up. However, gynecologists encourage moms to participate in order to have a strong and stable support system. Aside from that, this is also a way to bond.
