Truth be told, once you’ve become a merchant marine in the Philippines, you are eligible for many benefits; and sometimes, even the same as the members of the armed forces. Once they’ve retired, they have lucrative benefits that they can derive from their former employers. These include different types of compensation, pension, disability and medical benefits and insurance.

This article will discuss the different benefits that merchant marines in the Philippines get.

Disability Benefits
If a merchant marine gets injured while in service, they become eligible for certain benefits. However, they must show proof that they received medical treatment in connection with this injury and the personnel should provide the medical records pertaining to the condition of the patient. Moreover, the families of merchant marines are also eligible for a disability pension but they would be subjected to a background check to confirm that they are in need of financial help.

Medical and Dental Benefits
Usually, merchant marines that are active in service are eligible for treatment in accredited hospitals. However, care is limited to the type of case and the number of available beds or room. For veterans, outpatient treatment is available if they have service-related conditions and have lower income. For those that can afford to pay certain treatments, they should be willing to co-pay for the services.

Merchant marines that incurred dental injury during the service can qualify for a dental disability pension. All they have to do is apply for it.

Burial Benefits
Merchant marine veterans are eligible for burial benefits. Family members must apply for burial funds so that they can get discount. Surviving family members can also apply for a Dependency Compensation which can either go towards spouses, under age children or parents of the deceased.

Other Benefits
Filipino merchant marines are eligible for a guarantee for a home loan if they apply for it. Disabled veterans can also receive an insurance policy but depending on how long they were active in the service, their compensation may vary. Some veterans who want to continue to study may also apply for a vocational rehabilitation; they can receive funds for tuition, books and other school materials.

You see, being a merchant marine in the Philippines isn’t so bad at all. But if you want to establish a career in this field, you must have the proper education and maritime training in the Philippines so that you can easily qualify to become one.

It is important to take note though that it is a risky and demanding job so one must be prepared to take on this career. But once you’re in, the camaraderie, benefits and experience will be worth all the education and training that you underwent to.
