In a way, everyone is a writer. You have every right to either accept or reject this statement. But, before you take a decision; take time out to read the entire write-up.
Journalism talks about writing to inform, educate and entertain. This is basically what we do everyday, whether or not we are journalists or trained writers.
In this modern, information- driven age, you need discipline, focus, passion, commitment, consistency, and loads of raw, determined spirit to be able to ignore the any distractions of everyday life, sit down and write damned, good copies that will sell at the global market.
Yes, you and I as marketers want to change the world, either for good or bad, using our pen. But, remember the immutable laws of nature. What we do, good or bad returns back to us, either in this present life or next.
The laws of nature cannot be bribed, manipulated, set aside or out- rightly killed. These laws could only be mitigated. Do check your dictionary for the meaning of this beautiful word.
Writers are born or made. Therefore, in your passion and determination to contribute your quota in molding the collective consciousness or awareness of humanity, you must have the words: adding value to the society as you write your articles, book, newsletters, music, plays and documentaries.
So, as a teacher, business person, computer expert, marriage councilor, fashion designer, investment adviser, blogger, pastor, imam, journalist, etc, the entire world is your market place.
Internet has reduced our world to a global village and every profession and vacation is now online. So, whatever field you are writing on, value, benefits, insights, problem solving must be at the back of your mind.
It has nothing to do with your chains of university degrees. There are PhD holders out there who are looking out for government and others to employ them, instead of creating jobs for themselves and others.
So, as writers, no not show off how knowledgeable you are, just to impress others. Do not write to impress, but to express and give insightful tips on why people should buy and read your articles, books buy your products or services or visit your blog or site.
A man or woman passing through some hellish marital experiences is not interested in grammar for grammar sake.
So, if you write to show off, the person will simply ignore you and look out for articles, books, blogs or sites that will shed some lights on the peculiar problem he is she is presently facing.
Same for people looking out for business, or investment opportunities and advice on challenges facing them, among other areas. From my experience as an online and off-line journalist, I have observed that every man or woman, my very self inclusive is selfish and self-centered.
All over the world, people will always ask: What is in this idea, project, business, product or services for me, my loved ones or my company.
This, from my observations and interactions with people across the globe are the indices that will ensure that you succeed and make money eventually as a writer, if you are consistent.
