A Pittsburgh mother has been charged in the deaths of her twin boys, who were left unattended when she went to look for stolen marijuana and ended up making a fire, which later engulfed them.
The mother was identified as 32-year-old Dalawna Barren-Lett. She left her twin boys so that she could locate marijuana stolen from her purse. According to news reports on the topic, Berran-Lett has been charged with involuntary manslaughter as well as endangering the welfare of children and reckless endangerment by Allegheny County Police. Berran-Lett's twins were named Ky'heir and Dy'heir Arthur and both were three years of age. The mother left them unattended for around 45 minutes, and during that time the two toddlers started a fire while trying to cook something. This fire then eventually resulted in burning down the house and killing the boys.
According to the report filed, Berran-Lett left home in a hurry when she found out that a packet of marijuana was missing from her purse. She suspected that her 15-year-old stole the marijuana from her purse and left in her pursuit. She left the house at around 2:45 p.m. and locked the front door before leaving. While she was gone, the twins started up a fire while trying to cook something and the grease caught fire resulting in the whole house burning down.
A contractor near the house saw the flames and immediately called the firefighters. The call was made around 3:33 p.m. and the firefighters responded immediately. When Berran-Lett reached her apartment complex, she saw the entire place surrounded by firefighters and the realization of what had happened hit her.
Dalawana Berran-Lett said later that she had left her boys because it was too cold to take them. However, it was not the first time that she had left her twins alone like this. Back in December, she left both the boys in her TV room, but they went to the kitchen and lit up the stove to cook ribs. When she came back, the kitchen was on fire, but she managed to save the boys. At that time also, Berran-Lett went to shop for paper to roll up marijuana.
According to reports, one of the twins died of smoke inhalation and burn injuries, while the other one died of smoke inhalation and carbon monoxide poisoning. Dalawana Berran-Lett has surrendered to police and is said to be in a state of complete shock.
