Teen Gunman shoots dead 2 adults and 3 children in New Mexico

A teenager has been arrested and charged in the fatal shooting of five persons, including three children on Saturday night local time, inside a house in a rural area southwest of US downtown Albuquerque, local media reported on Sunday, Jan 20, 2013.

The 15-year-old boy identified as Nehemiah Griego was remanded to police custody Sunday night, even as investigators tried to piece together information on the case, as to what exactly lead to the shooting of two adults and three kids, in the New Mexico home.

Local networks like KOB 4 and KOAT 7 report, police were trying to ascertain whether an assault rifle has been used in the mass killings. The Albuquerque Journal has, however, reported that multiple weapons seem to have been used in the shooting, including an assault-type rifle.

According to the police all the victims suffered from multiple gunshot wounds. Several guns were discovered at the scene of the “gruesome” crime, one of which was a semi-automatic military-style rifle. Investigators were now trying to find out who owned the guns.

Bernalillo County Sheriff spokesman, Lt. Sid Covington said investigators were working to positively identify the five victims as also ascertain the teen's relationship to them. CNN quoting Covington said: "Initially responding deputies entered the home and found the five deceased inside the residence, so obviously it was a very gruesome scene."

There was no indication of a motive so far, he added. Further according to the Sheriff’s spokesman, presently their team was on to the meticulous points of processing the crime scene and gathering physical evidence and this is a massive scene with a lot of tangible evidence.

Neighbors meanwhile have told the press that the deceased included Greg Griego, a local spiritual leader, his wife, Sarah, and three of their ten children. The news of the shooting shocked the law enforcement community and officials in Albuquerque too, who then began to offer their condolences for Greg Griego, who was known for his work with the firefighters. He had spent close to 13 years as a volunteer chaplain at the county jail.

Greg Griego is understood to be the alleged assailant Nehemiah’s father. The teenager told someone after the deed was done and that person called 911, reports KOB 4. The police meanwhile refused to release details of any conversation that the teenager had with investigators. He was booked on two counts of murder and three counts of child abuse resulting in death.

The news of the mass shooting in New Mexico comes just days after US President Barack Obama made public, proposed restrictions on guns and ammunition in the wake of December school shooting in Newtown, Connecticut. The proposed measures include outlawing certain military-style assault rifles and plugging loopholes that allow several gun buyers to avoid background checks.

The horrific killing of 26 people at the Connecticut school in US, including 20 young children, has spurred on gun control advocates. However, opposition from Congress remains acute over new restrictions on the constitutional rig. On Saturday, pro-gun activists held rallies across the US to protest against the proposed gun-control measures.
