Syria is faced with humanitarian crisis of staggering proportions with more than 600,000 persons displaced to neighboring countries and the figures of death continuously on the rise.

This has been reported in of dated 13th of January 2013.

The US based 'International Rescue Committee' has appealed to the World community to step up its responses to the horrific incidents of rape and sexual violence that is happening in Syria.

The rapes are, at times, carried out in the presence of family members.

In one of the latest examples of violence, 13 persons were killed in an air-strike in the rebel held Maadamiyeh in Damascus.

The UK based Syrian Observatory of Human Rights (SOHR) have revealed that 8 of the dead are children and that many people are trapped beneath the rubble.

The SOHR is believed to be maintaining records of the various incidents of atrocities that are taking place in Syria and the associated casualties – but, that figure cannot be independently verified.

As per records of the UN, the dead in the uprising that started in March-2011 are approximately 60,000 with another 2-million who have been displaced.

As per details of the World Food Program, it is extending help to nearly 1.5-million Syrians but, inability to use the port of Tartus to deliver the food ultimately translates into the inevitable fact that the aid does not reach the people it is meant for.
