Hollywood actorsurprised fans Friday when he told a Chinese news network that he considers America as the most corrupt nation in the world. His remarks have drawn huge reactions over the Internet and some have even declared the Chinese comedian anti-American.
The actor may have amused billions of fans through his martial artistry and self-effacing comedy, but it’s also true that that Chan is quite passionate about politics and this time he might have gone a step too far in defending his Chinese Communist Party and criticizing the country that helped him become a popular actor.
Responding to the widespread criticism of China’s recent censorship of a popular newspaper, Chan insisted that the US is “the most corrupt country in the world.” He condemned Chinese who criticize their own country in front of foreigners, adding that he’s careful to only praise China when giving interviews in the US.
Chan admitted that even though his county has corruption problem, it’s making progress for the past couple of decades and soon it will be much better off than it was before. When asked which country Chan believes is most corrupted, he said America.
“Where does this Great Breakdown [financial crisis] come from? It started exactly from the world, the United States. When I was interviewed in the US, people asked me, I said the same thing. I said now that China has become strong, everyone is making an issue of China. If our own countrymen don’t support our country, who will support our country? We know our country has many problems. We [can] talk about it when the door is closed. To outsiders, [we should say] ‘our country is the best.’”
Previously Chan has criticized Taiwan and Hong Kong as models of what can go wrong when you have ‘too much freedom.' Chan has also once supported censorship of Chinese films saying that the people of China need to be controlled, so it was only a matter of time that he gave his comments on America as well.
His comments have sparked a controversy over the Internet as they reflect his anti-American feelings to the Chinese media. However, Chan’s comments are more in support of his own country than against America, which is a natural response when a country is being criticized internationally.
Still, Chan has long embraced the American film market and its only inevitable for many to wonder why the actor is spending so much time in a country which he believes is so corrupt.
