My late mother Dorothy Pratt was born in the Boston area in 1923. At the age of 5 she was diagnosed by the family doctor to have a case of Polio. Her left leg was the affected limb, having become noticeably weaker and smaller than her healthier right leg. The family doctor told my mother’s mother, Mrs. Lena Baker Winship Pratt, a member of the prominent Winship family of Boston, that there was no cure for this dreaded disease of polio.
Well, Lena Baker Winship Pratt had a plan. She would put’s teachings to the test! She had grown up in the Boston area and had been a life long member of the First Church of Christ Scientist, the religion more commonly referred to as Christian Science, the religion founded by Mary Baker Eddy.
Lena’s mother Susie Baker Winship, possibly a sister or cousin of Mary Baker Eddy, was a member of the first congregation of Mary Baker Eddy’s new church. Susie actually listened to Mary Baker Eddy preach in person. My grandmother Lena honestly believed, due to many years of exposure to Mary Baker Eddy’s teachings, that the power of God both within and surrounding her daughter could and would overcome this disease and restore perfect health back to her daughter.
Every day for the next year or so, beginning when my mother was 5 years old, Lena would have my mother stretch out on the couch, several times every day, and Lena would apply some form of oil, possibly cannabis oil, to Dorothy’s leg in a massaging manner. As Lena massaged the full length of Dorothy’s left leg with the oil, Lena would also make positive affirmations to Dorothy such as, “Every day, in every way, God is making you healthier and healthier.”
After doing this every day for about one year, several sessions every day, morning, noon, and night, my mother’s left leg had become totally healed and was perfectly normal again. The polio was gone. She was healed!
My mother’s belief or faith in the healing power of God, faith made increasingly stronger by the repetitive positive affirmations of her loving mother, was the actual force, power, or cause that brought about her healing. The family doctor proclaimed it to be a miracle. Lena knew better. Lena knew that her faith and, even more importantly, Dorothy’s faith in God’s healing power, was the true cause of the healing.taught the same thing when he said in Matthew 9:29, “According to your faith, be it unto you.” This is the essence of Christian Science.
