Robert Levinson, an expert in Russian organized crimes, retired from the FBI in 1998 and became a private investigator.
He went missing in Iran in 2007 while carrying out investigations on cigarette smuggling and was last heard of from the Iranian island of Kish.
Later, in 2011, his wife received an anonymous e-mail with a 54-second video and 5-photographs in which Robert Levinson could be seen dressed in Guantanamo jumpsuit.
This has been reported in telegraph.co.uk of dated 9th of January 2013.
These video and photographs suggests that he is very much alive and held against his will in some location in Iran but the Iranian authorities do not accept that.
Incidentally, the island of Kish is a popular resort and a free trade zone where US citizens do not need any visa – and, it is also an area where smugging and organized crime thrive.
Robert's wife Christine has met President Obama and John Brennan, the President's nominee to head the CIA and both have assured her that they would leave no stone unturned to locate him and bring him back.
