A 222-Kg blue-fin tuna has been purchased for a record price of $1.7-million in an auction in Tokyo's Tsukiji fish market by the sushi owner Kiyoshi Kimura – it had been caught off north-eastern Japan.
This price is nearly three times the price paid last year for a fish that weighed less by 47-Kg – still the higher price was paid because stocks of the fish was fast reducing due to overfishing.
This has been reported in bbc.com of dated 5th of January 2013.
The fish has been taken to the Sushi Zanmai chain by Kimura and its cost works out to approximately $7600 per Kg – Japan consumes nearly 50% of blue-fin tunas globally.
